From working with 7000+ farmers to raising over 1 Million birds; expanding to 10 states in Nigeria, hosting the Vice President of Nigeria, Prof. Osinbajo at our office and being honored with a National award by the President himself, His Excellency Muhammadu Buhari, this year came and went by so fast.
This year we worked with so much speed to get so much done with our eyes focused on the ultimate goal – Empower 1 Million farmers by 2021.
There is a lot to celebrate in our 2nd year as a startup: we celebrate our incredible staff who go above and beyond to get the work done as at when due and are always available to take on more when needed; our farm sponsors who not only support smallholder farmers by sponsoring farm units but have become ‘Farmcrowdy Ambassadors’ to their friends and family; and very importantly, our farmers who cooperate with us to learn new farming techniques to increase their own income and join us in the fight against global food insecurity.
We proposed, submitted and registered the ‘National Digital Agriculture Day’ with the Ministry of Trademark and Patent. This is seriously a big deal! The ‘National Digital Agriculture Day’ will now be marked annually on November 14 to signify the start and rapid growth of the digital agriculture revolution in Nigeria.
Amongst our many achievements this year, we are proud to say that we were one of the 15 startups selected from across Africa by GSMA to win the $325,000 Ecosystem Accelerator Innovation Fund, a fund which has provided us the opportunity to scale our impact based initiatives to more farmers across Nigeria.
The Farmcrowdy app has been adopted by so many, garnering close to 70,000+ downloads this year and won the award for the ‘Best Agritech Solution’ at The AppsAfrica Innovation Awards.
We established an office in the country’s capital, FCT Abuja, made inroads into more regions in Nigeria and other countries in Africa where we made lots of new friends, attended two staff weddings, got a few surprise visits from some of our celebrity fans, went on two farm tours, hosted the first Farmcrowdy Talent Show, ate lots of cakes and even got a Farmcrowdy baby!
We were invited to speak at several events across the globe including Meet The Farmers’ Conference in Nigeria, Ghana, and Dubai; the Africa Technology Summit in Tokyo, the Annual Information Technology Conference in Abuja, amongst many others.
Most of the awards we won this year were unexpected and has encouraged us to be more innovative in our approach to solving problems. We won ‘Agro-Innovator of the Year’ from the Nigeria Agriculture Awards and ‘Digital Business of the Year 2018’ at the Global African Business Awards. We were very proud to be presented with the ‘National Productivity Order of Merit Award’ by His Excellency, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, President, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Our CEO, Onyeka Akumah was also selected by Quartz Africa as one of its top 30 Innovators in its Africa Innovators list alongside other African Innovators like Bibi Bakare-Yusuf, Moustapha Cisse and Tania Douglas.
At our Head office, we received 15 tech hub representatives across Africa brought together by the Village Capital team. They came with an international media crew that included Reuters Int’l. The BBC World Service also visited our Lagos office, met with some of our farmers on our farms and published a piece about us on their site.
Other notable global media mentions include Channel News Asia, Disrupt Africa, Netscape, Yahoo Finance, Techcrunch, This Day, Ventureburn and Times Delhi.
As a startup, specifically an Agri-tech platform, we do a lot of thinking on our feet. We are writing the playbook on-the-go and building a solid foundation that we and other players in Nigeria’s (and Africa’s) growing agri-tech space can confidently stand on years to come.
Our Mission is to enable everyone participate in the achievement of global food security and Our Vision is to be the foremost digital agriculture platform in Africa admired for its impact on collaborative food production and boosting food security across the continent.
We celebrate our growth these two years. We celebrate every one of our farm sponsors, followers, subscribers, and fans from all around the world. You’ve been an integral part of this journey and we can say that we wouldn’t be here without your support.
Happy Anniversary Farmcrowdy and Happy Digital Agriculture Day!
