March 8th is known as the International Women’s Day!
A day set aside to celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievement of the women. Some have chosen this day as a day of advocacy for the rights of women; better working conditions, better opportunities and continuous support for women in all spheres and walks of life.
The International Women’s Day represents another opportunity to reflect on progress made by women and to celebrate their acts of courage, resilience, tenacity and extraordinary contributions to their various communities.
Today, we at Farmcrowdy choose to celebrate Women Farmers who make up almost 50% of the agricultural labour force in Sub-Saharan Africa, an increase from about 45% in 1980. (Source: UN’s Food and Agriculture Organisation, 2011).
As in other walks of life, women also face significant inequality on farms even when they are as good as men in farming. This inequality has deprived them of the much needed resources to improve their farming practice; thereby creating a 20-30% gap in their productivity yield when compared to that of male farmers.
This gap can lead to increased hunger and continuous poverty, which is why Farmcrowdy is providing women farmers the same opportunities as their male counterparts on the farms. We are providing them with access to knowledge and resources that will help boost their productivity and enable us fulfill our mission of ending poverty one farmer at a time.
Happy Women’s Day to all our Women Farmers! We celebrate you all!
